julian baggini

He is an old hero of mine and I can't quite tell if he's a vegetarian. This article makes me think that he might be. It's short and blunt but I think it sums up the meat eaters dilemma quite well. I particularly like this:
...we feel we can have our happy animals and eat them too

Julian Baggini really gets his point accross very quickly and with great effect.

Not only the number of birds being killed for the bird flu, but the callous manner in which they are, is really disturbing. It seems all our concerns for animal welfare are out the window when we are fearful. Fear is generally always a cause of cruelty and war. This is a war on birds.

The rise of all these dreaded animal diseases is also a result of the intensive, densely packed ways we breed animals these days. The spread of disease is much less likely where there is animal diversity and lower animal populations. Intensive animal farming is not the way to go, although it seems to be the only way to meet the growing demands for meat.

I am meeting more and more vegetarians which is great, but the number of meat eaters who are completely oblivious of the moral implications, and with totally different value systems w.r.t. animals, makes me realise that meat eating will be around for a very, very long time still.

I suppose, it took us many thousands of years to advance from cannabilism. So we'll have to patient...

If Julian Baggini is a vegetarian then he shouldn't be using the pronoun "we" in the second paragraph. By using it he is including himself in the group of so-called ethical meat eaters that he is talking about there.

The rest of the article does indicate that he's not entirely happy being in that group, to say the least.
