the island

Last night I watched "The Island". I thought it was pretty good. For those who don't know, in this future the rich and famous get cloned to provide spare body parts to help them live longer generally or in case of an emergency. Naturally our hero's escape their comfy white prison and they find out what their purpose in life is. They are convinced that if their 'owners' only knew what happened down at the mill they would be so outraged that the whole project would be brought to a screeching halt. But, as one of the wiser character's points out
just because you wanna eat the burger don't mean you wanna meet the cow
It's funny cause it's true.

The Island brought up a range of interesting subjects:

1. If someone else tells you what the purpose of your life is, will that make you satifisfied?

2. Does the promise of a beautiful reward at the end of one's current dreary situation (life), make the current state of affairs all worthwhile?

3. It brings up ethical issues about clones. Like I-Robot, it makes us realise that being a person and individual, depends on more than just what you're made of. The clone has as much identity and individuality as the original; the intelligent, sensitive robot, inspires as much empathy as a human being.

4. The point that Stuart brought up: Sometimes we just don't care what happens to other sensitive beings, as long as we reap the benefits and we don't have to see their suffering.

If you're still not convinced to watch it then consider that it has two of the most alluring co-stars, Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson...
